The fact that our children are the most tested in the world is not a fact that can escape us. But despite this apparent attention to quality, it seems education is sacrificed. Before children start school their intelligence constantly amazes the adults around them, but once they step onto the conveyabelt of learning, it seems learning becomes a chore. It is because of this rather sad fact that home schooling is becoming increasingly popular, as parents take on the challenge of teaching their children at home.
But is it a good idea? Teachers have specific training, but parents know their children and are able and willing to attend to their needs. Besides school does not merely provide an academic education but also an invaluable social education. Home schooling groups attempt to remedy this shortfall by meeting up regularly, but does this suffice?
The Swedish model is often given as an example. Despite children first entering formal education at the age of seven, two years later than their English counterparts, by the age of eleven, they are top of the European Literacy Tables. Should this not be an example to us all or are we too hopeful just wishing to model ourselves the much coveted Scandinavian way of life?
